WHAT I DO...
According to the province of Quebec’s statistics alone, we, as Quebecers,
throw away more than 26 pounds of clothing each year and the Canadian in total, it's around 81 pounds a year.
In 2016, 107 billion pieces of clothing were sold worldwide, thus representing 500% more than 20 years ago, as reported by the world’s leading market research company, Euromonitor International.
As consumers, we consume five times more garments than 20 years ago.
An overconsumption that generates tons of waste and greenhouse gases.
In the United States, Americans throw over 14 millions of tons of textiles per
year. Of these, a striking 99% could be reused or recycled. Unfortunately,
85% end up in landfill sites.
Additionally, a 2017 report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation indicates that global textile production has doubled in the past 15 years.
In light of this shocking reality impacting the ever-growing number of clothes produced, it is disturbing to realise that EVERY SECOND we throw away - on a global scale - the equivalent of a garbage truck of textiles intended to be buried or burned.
As a Fashion designer and major consumer of clothes and accessories, it
was impossible for me to turn a blind eye to such a reality. That made me
wonder how, in my own way, I could make a real difference and give
fashion a more ethical and sustainable face. Creative by nature and always
on the lookout for the newest trends, the bet was on of launching my own
fashion brand: _OPAAT_ One Piece At A Time.
_OPAAT_ is a line of unique, original and trendy pieces made from
second-hand clothes and fabric scraps. This innovative approach promotes
the recycling of fabrics, and especially of worn-out clothes which are no
longer of interest for the majority of trendy people, lightly damaged or
By transforming old garments in new fashion unique pieces according to my
inspirations and newest fashion trends, the _OPAAT_ brand not only gives
a second wind to any stylish wardrobe and but also make both the industry
and the clients contribute actively to better sustainable practices.
All unique _OPAAT_ crafted fashion pieces are made available for sale
online in Shop - Coming soon section of our website as soon they are ready.
I am currently looking for the organization with which I intend to do this collaboration. If you have any suggestions, please share them with me.
